I remember being told as a kid to make sure I got plenty of Vitamin C to stay healthy. Well, it turns out that Vitamin C does more than just ward off scurvy (aye matey); it is also really great for our skin. Vitamin C has been turning up in a ton of different skin care products. Some of the things that it promises are:
- Aids in the production of collagen, a protein in our bodies that helps with elasticity and firmness of our skin. As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen so using a product loaded with vitamin C (specifically the ascorbic acid kind) will help with the anti-aging process.
- Helps to neutralize free radicals. Not to be too science-y, but free radicals are unstable molecules meaning they are short an electron. They basically roam around our bodies stealing electrons from other molecules, which in turn creates more free radicals and sets off a chain reaction of cellular damage. Antioxidants like Vitamin C can donate a spare electron to free radicals which stops their thievery and prevents bad things like skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Thank you, AP Chemistry.
- Helps repair damage done by the sun. My college age self is definitely happy about that. It does not protect against the sun so you need to slather on the SPF if you plan on being outside but it can help reduce any existing brown or red spots. Add in Vitamin C’s anti-inflammatory properties and it all adds up to amazing skin.
Enough with the science, let’s talk about makeup. Well, actually skin care but I get pretty excited about that too. After all, great skin is the perfect base for a flawless makeup application. One of my personal favorite Vitamin C products is the Kiehls Powerful Strength Line Reducing Eye Brightening Concentrate.
I have been using this eye cream for about two months now and I have been so happy with the results. Having two children has definitely disrupted my sleep cycle and it shows nowhere more than under my eyes. I swear I did not have dark circles until the day my first child was born. This eye cream contains 10.5% Pure Vitamin C which is supposed to improve the appearance of aging skin. I don’t have a ton of lines around my eyes but I was starting to notice a few especially when I smile. I definitely feel like they have improved quite a bit and I only really notice any lines if I am like seriously squinting. (Which is a bad idea anyways.) This product also contains Haloxyl which is supposed to help eliminate dark circles and I definitely notice a difference. As soon as I put this on, my under eyes are immediately brighter. I also really love this product because it is so lightweight so it is perfect to layer under makeup. Kiehls also makes a similar product that is meant to be used as a face serum. I personally haven’t tried this one but if it is as effective as the eye cream, then it is definitely a winner.
I have also recently tried the Sunday Riley CEO products. This line contains a cleansing oil, face serum and moisturizer and I have actually tried all three. The cleansing oil is a decent oil, but I can’t really say for sure if it helps with anti-aging. My mom has been using both the serum and the moisturizer and she absolutely loves them. I find the moisturizer to be a bit on the heavy side but my skin definitely looks very radiant after using it. I have the smaller size that came in the Sunday School Set so my plan is to save it for winter when my skin gets super dry. The serum is pretty unique because it contains 15% ultra stable advanced Vitamin C. This seems to be one of the more potent products out there, at least out of the ones that I have been looking at. There might be something more powerful out there so don’t quote me!
Another really popular Vitamin C loaded serum is the Truth Serum from Ole Henrickson. This is pretty highly rated on Sephora and is seems to be one of the OG Vitamin C products. In fact, Ole considers himself an early adopter of using Vitamin C in skincare because of it’s antioxidant properties and role in supporting natural collagen. I personally haven’t tried this product although I have sampled one of the moisturizers from the Truth line. It definitely has a very intense citrus smell so that is something to keep in mind if you are sensitive to fragrance.
If you are looking to incorporate some Vitamin C into your skincare routine, but don’t want to shell out a ton of cash, I would definitely check out The Ordinary’s Vitamin C Suspension. This product contains 23% ascorbic acid AND 2% Hyaluronic Acid so not only do you get all of the amazing anti-aging benefits of the Vitamin C but you also get some additional hydration. Again, I have not personally tried this product, possibly because it seems to be sold out quite a bit. But with a price tag of under $6 it is definitely worth a shot especially if you are on a budget.
Thank you so much for checking out our blog! I hope you are inspired to check out some Vitamin C loaded skin care or at least grab a glass of OJ!
