Hi everyone, it’s Lyn here! In last weeks post, I shared all of my favorite beauty products from 2017. Originally I was going to do one post with a whole bunch of favorite from different categories but when I started listing products there were way too many for one post. So, I decided to break it up into two posts so keep reading for part 2!
To start off, after I wrote last weeks post I realized that I totally forgot to talk about setting sprays. Since 2017 was basically the year of the setting spray, it felt wrong to not include my favorite. It seems like every brand came out with a setting spray this year, but my favorite has to be the Morphe Setting Mist. It is an aerosol (sorry ozone) so the mist is absolute perfection and the price point is not bad either. My only complaint would be that it is hard to tell how much you have left in the bottle so every time I use it, I am scared that it will run out. I am actually about to order another one so that I have a back up in case that happens!
Okay, on to other categories…
BRIOGEO Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo $42 I have talked about in previous posts that I have battled a flaky scalp ever since middle school if not earlier. When I saw this at Sephora I was so excited to try it. It is a little pricey but I don’t wash my hair all that often and I don’t actually use this every time I shampoo. I probably only use it about once a month or if I know that I want my hair to last as long as possible before washing it again. It has the tingle of a tea tree shampoo and my hair is completely flake free after using it. In fact, I can easily go a week before I start to see any flakes which is usually my indication that I need to wash my hair! There are a few other products in this line, including a scalp treatment and a dry shampoo, that I am looking forward to trying as well.
T3 Whirl Convertible Styling Wand $185 I have seen the T3 styling wand all over my Instagram feed and it is pretty easy to see why it seems to be the curling iron of choice for a lot of beauty bloggers. It is pretty expensive so definitely an investment. I opted to just purchase just the the styling wand as opposed to the trio since I didn’t really think I would use the other barrels as often and I wanted to save a little money. To be honest, I am not very good at curling my hair. For the longest time, I used to make Mel do it for me until I got this wand and watched a few YouTube videos on how to use it. I found it pretty easy to use so now I can curl my whole head in about 10 minutes (I have a massive amount of hair so this is no easy feat.) and I don’t even need to use the heat proof glove anymore! The curls last for at least a few days depending on how curly I make it. I also like that I can do a variety of different styles depending on how big the sections are or how long I hold it on the wand. Mel bought me the 1 inch clamp for Xmas so I am excited to experiment with this one for more traditional looking curls.
Invisibobble Original The Traceless Hair Ring $8 This was totally one of those impulse grabs at the checkout counter at Sephora. Is it just me or does anyone else spend more money waiting to check out at Sephora than in the actual store? Anyway, I am soooo glad that I bought this. It is life changing for anyone with super long or thick hair. I happen to fall into both categories so I definitely needed this. At first I was skeptical because it looks like the key rings we used to use at cheerleading camp. I prefer to wear my hair in a top knot at the gym but it would take 2 or 3 ponytail holders to get it to stay up and even then it would often fall down during certain movements like jump roping. Now, I just use one ponytail holder to make a ponytail and then use this to do the bun part and it holds so well. Another thing I love is that it does not leave too much of a bump (unless my hair is wet, then there is a little bit of a crease but it is totally fixable with a curling iron). This is so important for someone who only washes their hair once a week. Another thing I love is that so far it seems pretty indestructible. I am constantly breaking regular elastics but other than stretching out a bit, I am still going strong with the same invisibobble since July! And I still have the two others from the package that I haven’t used yet. Amazing.
Donna Karan Chasmere Mist Deodorant $27 I felt so extra when I bought this because who buys $27 deodorant? This girl. I am so addicted to this stuff. It smells so amazing and so far is lasting me a pretty long time. Since it is so expensive, I really only wear it if I am going out. I stick with my normal Secret or Dove dry spray if I am going to the gym or just lounging around the house. I was also surprised to find that it actually does work. I wore it around Disney World in 90 degree plus heat and I still smelled pretty darn good at the end of the day. Even my husband has commented on how good I smell when I wear this. Enough said.
Nivea Cocoa Butter In Shower Lotion $7.99 Or Lush Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner $35.95 I’m not sure what took me so long but in 2017 I finally discovered the miracle that is in shower lotions. I have terrible dry skin but I am also super lazy so I never put lotion on after I shower. I also really hate that greasy feeling that lotion leaves on your skin that makes it really hard to put on your skinny jeans. In shower body lotions are the perfect solution for me. My two favorites are the Nivea Cocoa Butter and the Ro’s Argan from Lush. Both products are used the same way. After washing, you slather them all over your body and then rinse them off. Your skin is left feeling super moisturized but without the greasy lotion feeling. And I find it to be way easier than putting on lotion after my shower. The Nivea one is definitely more affordable and you can pick it up at Target or CVS. My husband is also a huge fan of this one. And in fact he just told me that our second bottle is almost empty. The Lush one is more expensive and has a totally different scent. I love anything that smells like roses so I love it. When I first started using it, I felt like it left a little bit of a film on my skin but eventually I got used to it. I just purchased my second container of this stuff so I am definitely a fan of both.
Valentino Donna Fragrance $98-$135 I know it’s hard to talk about perfume since you guys can’t smell it and it is very difficult to describe fragrance notes. But since I am such a huge fan of this one, I wanted to include it in this list. I had been wearing Chanel Coco Mademoiselle for YEARS and while I still absolutely love that scent, I felt like it was time to diversify a little bit. The Donna fragrance from Valentino has similar notes to the Chanel but is different enough that I still feel I made a change. The bottle is also so gorgeous that I can’t wait to display it when we renovate our bathroom. I just saw on Nordstrom that there is a hair fragrance in this scent so that is definitely going on my wish list.
Essie Gel Couture Polish in Pre-Show Jitters & Lace Me Up $11.50 Essie Gel Couture Top Coat $11.50 Between going to the gym and managing my two kids, it is hard for me to get a manicure to last more than a few days with regular polish. I used to get gel manis but I felt like my nails were not as strong so I prefer to save those for when I will be traveling or special occasions. When I saw the Essie Gel Couture polish, I was excited to try it. It has the look of gel but without the light and it removes with regular nail polish remover. Another issue I have with the gel polish is that the whole tin foil soaking process takes forever and is a pain to do myself. I am a huge fan of the Gel Couture polish. I find that it lasts longer than regular polish on me and I think it even dries a little quicker. I am a huge fan of creamy pink shades so my two favorites are Pre-Show Jitters which is more white and Lace Me Up which is a true pink. The top coat is also great. I have tried it with other polishes and it does seem to make them last a little bit longer although not as long as when I use the Gel Couture polish as well. I am excited to try some other shades especially some of the darker shades and glitter.
KL Polish$8.50 Mel and I are huge fans of KathleenLights so when she launched her KL Polish brand we couldn’t wait to try it. Her shades are consistently both interesting and beautiful and I find I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for each season. I have to say that so far this winter collection has been my favorite. I have already used three of the shades and loved them all. I paired Ace (a true red) with Casino NIght (gold glitter) for Christmas and it was perfectly festive. I also wore Cassiopeia (black sparkle) for New Years and I loved it because it was different from anything else that I own. I am also really excited to try Mindy which is a very rich, dark berry color. I have been pairing the KL Polish with the Essie Gel Couture polish that I talked about before and it does seem to prolong the life of my manicure. I am definitely excited to see what shades she comes out with next.
Swell Bottle $42 This might seem pretty random but I do think that one of the keys to keeping your skin (and body) healthy is drinking tons of water. This is definitely a challenge for me so I am always looking for ways to help me out. I really like my water to be very cold and I noticed that I would drink like half of a bottle and then forget about it and by the time I would remember, it would be warm and I didn’t want to drink it. The S’well bottle is the perfect solution because it keeps your water cold for a really long time. It promises 24 hours which I cannot swear to but I have definitely gone like 8 or 9 hours and it is still ice cold. At first I was worried that I would be annoyed at having to screw the top off and on every time I wanted to drink but I find that it doesn’t really bother me. I snagged mine at Nordstrom on sale for $20 which I was pretty excited about and the metallic pink is right up my alley. When my mother in law and I saw the shelf full of bottles on sale, we each bought a bunch of them to give as gifts. I love bringing it to the gym as well because I don’t have to worry about mixing up my generic Poland Spring bottle with someone else’s.
Lululemon Energy Bra Nulux $52 (on sale $39) I am always on the hunt for the perfect sports bra and I think I have finally found a winner. I love all of the cute strappy backs but most of them do not provide enough support or are super low cut so I worry about flashing the entire gym every time I do a burpee. When I found the Energy Bra Nulux at Lululemon I was excited to try it since it says it provides medium support for B and C cups. I am officially obsessed with this bra. It is the perfect amount of support and is not overly difficult to get off. For reference, I am a 34C and I wear an 8 and I do a pretty high intensity boot-camp type class at my Cross Fit gym. Since they are always coming out with new patterns, the old ones will periodically go on sale. Currently there are a few different ones on sale for $39 so I would definitely check out the sale page once you know your size since it is final sale. I have also tried the regular Energy bra which is a different material and I have to say that I definitely prefer the Nulux version. It is much softer and more comfortable. The other one felt tighter and much more restrictive but I love the pattern so I am hoping it will stretch out a bit. Another thing I love about this bra is that it washes really well and the pads stay in place even through the washing machine and dryer!
Athleta High Rise Shine Chaturanga Tight $89 (on sale $33.99) The faux leather leggings trend is so hot right now and I really love the way that they dress up an outfit compared to regular leggings. I just recently purchased the High Rise Shine Chaturanga Tight but I am so obsessed that I had to include it in this list. The high rise sucks everything in and stays in place. I love that these have the shiny look of faux leather but honestly feel like you are wearing a workout pant. I am normally between a small and medium in Athleta pants and I bought the Medium Petite and it fits me perfectly; even the length is exactly where I want it, right at my ankle. The black and brown color are currently on sale with an additional 20% off so they end up being around $50. A lot of sizes are selling out so definitely snag these while you can. I was excited because I actually saw another MP pop up last night so I grabbed another pair since I love them so much!
Thank you for checking out Part 2 of my 2017 Favs! I hope you get a chance to try out some of these things and that you love them as much as I do!
