Hi everyone, it’s Lyn here! Influenster recently sent me the Herbal Essences Deep Sea Mineral Shampoo and Conditioner to try out and and review. I have been using it for a couple of weeks now so I am excited to share with you my thoughts!
If you have read any of my previous posts about hair, than you know that I have a bit of a problem scalp. I do tend to get quite a bit flaky, especially in the winter when I am super dry. I have noticed that certain shampoos can make this situation worse so that is something that is always on my mind when trying out new products. I also have highlights in my hair so the ends of my hair can get extremely dry which is also something that I need to think about.
I went on the Herbal Essences website to get some more information about this shampoo and conditioner and to find out what they promise to do. The shampoo says that it restores balance to scalp and moisturizes hair which sounds perfect for me. It also says that it is color safe and has calming notes of ocean breeze, floral bouquet and warm amber. I was not completely familiar with the ingredients that were listed but it does seem to be loaded with antioxidants that would be great for my hair. The conditioner basically makes the exact same claims and seems to have pretty much the same ingredients as the shampoo.
The first thing that I noticed when I started using the shampoo was the scent. It definitely reminded me of those ocean scented candles which I do really enjoy. I also noticed that the scent lingered in my hair for the remainder of the day. I do air dry my hair so I probably noticed the smell mainly because it was still wet; but it still seemed stronger than other shampoos. The consistency is pretty thick but it did lather up quite nicely which is a characteristic that I enjoy in shampoos because I feel like I am really getting my scalp clean. After washing my hair, I did not have any flakes in my scalp which is amazing. I only wash my hair about once a week during the winter so it is also important to me that my hair stays looking reasonably clean for as long as possible. I did notice my hair start to get pretty greasy by about day 6 which actually isn’t too bad. The only shampoos that I have tried that can get me through a full week are Head and Shoulders and the Briogeo Charcoal Scalp treatment. My only complaint is that my hair did feel a bit dry. My hair is color treated so I have to be careful about what I use on my ends. I would probably pair this shampoo with a deep moisturizing mask or treatment.
Now for the conditioner. Honestly I was a little disappointed. I really enjoyed using the shampoo so I had very high hopes for the conditioner. First off, the scent was not nearly as strong in the conditioner as it was in the shampoo. This wasn’t too big of an issue since I was already engulfed in the fragrance but it was something that I noticed. I also noticed right away that the conditioner was not nearly as thick as I was expecting it to be. When I got out of the shower, my hair was extremely tangled. I do have pretty long thick hair so this is not totally unusual but it is not typically this bad when I use my normal conditioner. (For reference, I have been using the Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Conditioner.) After washing my hair, my normal routine is to blow dry for a few minutes so that my hair isn’t sopping wet and then I put it in a bun using my Invisibobble hair tie and let it air dry the rest of the way. The next day, if I am going out I will then curl it or flat iron it. After using the Herbal Essences conditioner, when I took my hair out of the bun I noticed that it was clumping and twisting together, almost in dreadlocks. It was honestly so weird. I’m not sure I have ever had that happen before. Once I brushed it out and curled it, it was totally fine but it was still very strange. I also noticed after curling it that I needed to use a little extra hair oil on my ends and it still looked a bit drier than normal.
Overall, I was really excited to try out these products. I actually really like the shampoo and could definitely see myself continuing to use it in the future. However, I was not a huge fan of the conditioner. It just did not have provide my hair with enough moisture. It might work out better for you if your hair is not as dry as mine, but unfortunately for me it was a miss and will be sent to the guest bathroom. When I use the shampoo in the future, I will pair it with a deep conditioning treatment or mask. I have been a huge fan of the Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair mask but I would love to get some suggestions from you guys as well so leave me a comment if there are any hair treatments that you swear by! And of course, thank you to Influenster for sending me these products to check out! This was my first box that they sent to me and I can’t wait to try out and review more products in the future!
